It was hot. And being a new customer I wasn't sure what to do. "You don't have to stand in line the whole time," a woman informed me."Just leave your box on the ground to mark your place."
Relieved, I hid in my car, hoping to avoid a long line that sometimes winds around the block leaving you in plain view of people driving by. Anonymity is important in these hostile times.
A heavy set boy took his place ahead of me. He had the unfortunate job of getting groceries for his family. To my surprise the boy was unfazed. He was chatty and cheerful, perfectly comfortable in an element that made my skin crawl in shame.
The door opened and a man emerged. "See that guy?" The boy said bitterly." he gets here real early and takes all the good stuff." As the man walked past us he raised his arm in triumph. Pink cupcakes sparkled like jewels in the bright sunlight.
Later that day, I ran into the same man at the only grocery store in town. He and a buddy were complaining about all of the freeloaders in America,
I thought of that kid in line at the food bank. He just wanted a fair shot at some stale cupcakes.
As much as I wanted to blow the guy's cover I kept my mouth shut. Anonymity is important.
Even for a Cupcake Republican.
